Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind & Origin of Consciousness

The Physicians Aphorism:

First, Above All, Do No Harm; Moreover, Salvage the Potential for Life.

Throughout the ages, bicameral societies and civilizations have established themselves as powers and “authorities”, the nature of which developed without any notion of what it meant to be fully conscious as human beings...that is, except for a “power elite” - a culturally selected group initiated into the “rites of gnosis”, or consciousness.  This new awareness of self-as-individual, and capable of distinguishing the difference between one and  "other"; i.e., environment, nature, objective reality, etc., enabled those fortunate enough to have been selected for such initiation to assume a power over nature that could be used to great advantage and/or detriment, depending upon just who was either fortunate or unfortunate enough, as the case may be, to be on the receiving end.

Since the majority of  people existing during the earlier periods of ancient history were subject to a “bicameral “ state of being, meaning essentially that they were incapable of distinguishing between reality and illusion, they could also very conveniently be exploited by the initiated power elite.  Because of this new-found awareness within the circle of the cult, its ability to manipulate the majority through its bicameral tendencies and pre-conscious state of being, wars would often break out and the many would be sacrificed for something of which they knew nothing.  Who really knows the “truth” when the morality of one warring faction is so extremely different from the other, and the categorical imperative is determined by the provincial morality as believed to be “universal” and true for all.

Even rational thinking can be limited within a framework that is dictated by certain assumptions and presuppositions leading to conclusions based entirely on the half-truths of the “non sequitur”; i.e., a statement that does not follow logically from anything that was previously said; or, an inference that doesn’t follow from the premise, but “sounds” right.

Until every individual is fully conscious of his or her own personal freedom and the responsibility linked to this empowerment, none of us are ever completely free from the illusions that serve to manipulate each other.

Ultimately, historical and environmental pressures confronting any given people at any given time can serve to break down the bicameral tendencies that only serve to enslave the innocently unsuspecting majority.  Liberty is won only at the cost of resisting surrender to the conspiracy...both the conspiracy from without and from within.

Footnote:

The theory of human evolution as portrayed by Darwin is considered by some to play more of a part within a larger totality. Perhaps the concept of synergy as it relates to evolution provides an apt illustration of what I mean; simply, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. In other words, the missing link in Darwin's system is consciousness itself.  The bicameral mind, as described by the Honorable Professor Julian Jaynes (who also wrote the book on this subject), is a stage of growth and development to which all humans are subjects. Challenges that present themselves as problems in nature are, in reality, opportunities for growth; hence, survival of the fittest. According to Dr. Jaynes, a breakdown of the bicameral mind occurs when pressures from the environment impinge upon the human organism, forcing it to meet the challenge or default to it; i.e., "fight or flight". So far, we can see parallels between Darwin and Dr. Jaynes; however, this is the point of their Great Divide.

Refer again to the so-called "missing link" in Darwin's system.  Einstein had the same problem with the unified field theory. All of his life he searched for that same missing link. However, he, much like Darwin, failed to see that it was not to be found in the physical sciences, per se, but in the science of consciousness itself. The discovery that something happened at sometime in the distant past to awaken man to himself was, in its very essence, the simplest yet most amazing of all breakthroughs: The Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind IS the primordial catalyst resulting in the most marvelous creation of Conscious Man as we know him today!

So, how does all of this explain the behavior of a "power elite", whose primary objective has always been the control and manipulation of power? Why are our public schools, at least here on the continent, experiencing such abominable chaos and confusion? Why are children killing children? Who really instigated the riot in Seattle over the World Trade Organization and its meeting with the President of the United States? These are only questions that do not presume to know any concrete answers...yet. However, history has shown time and again that Machiavellian strategies and tactics have often been used to deceive and distract, confuse and dissemble, so as to manipulate an unconscious electorate through the vestiges of a bicameral past.
